Rules in Québec
- Québec's building authority (RBQ) recommends hiring a contractor who holds an RBQ licence before signing a contract: this gives you access to a financial guarantee if a dispute arises.
- The listings in this directory come from active licences in subcategory 15.5 (plumbing) of the RBQ registry. You can check a licence number in the public registry.
- The CMMTQ also advises checking that the contractor is a member of the Corporation and holds the licence subcategories required for your work.

Seasonality
Sewer backups mostly happen during violent storms and spring snowmelt, when the municipal system is overloaded. A well-maintained backwater valve generally limits the damage.
Prices and timelines
Rates and timelines vary by plumber, access and the scope of work, so we do not publish prices without a verifiable source. Ask for a written quote that specifies the nature and duration of the parts and labour warranty, as the CMMTQ recommends.
Guide: sewer backup in Longueuil
A sewer backup is unsanitary: the priority is to protect the occupants, then find the cause so it does not happen again.
Before you call
- Stop using water (toilets, laundry, showers) while the backup lasts.
- Stay away from contaminated water and keep children and pets away.
- Take photos of the damage for your insurer and, if needed, the municipality.
- Ask your neighbours whether they are affected: this can point to a problem with the municipal system.
How a typical job goes
- Stopping the backupThe plumber clears the line so wastewater flows again.
- Camera inspectionThey inspect the sewer line along its full accessible length.
- Finding the causeRoots, a break, a poor slope or an overloaded municipal system: the cause guides the solution.
- RecommendationsThey suggest the right work, such as maintaining or adding a backwater valve.
What affects the bill
- Clearing the line only, or repairing the pipe.
- The camera inspection and pinpointing the break.
- Installing or replacing a backwater valve.
- Excavation work, if it turns out to be necessary.
Ask for a written quote that separates the emergency call from the recommended corrective work.
Frequently asked questions
- What is a backwater valve?
- It is a valve that stops sewage from backing up into the basement during heavy rain or a municipal blockage. Several cities offer a subsidy for installation.
- Who is responsible for a backup, the city or me?
- It depends on where the blockage is (private vs municipal line). A plumber documents the cause, useful for a claim to the city or insurer.
- How can I prevent a backup?
- Install a backwater valve, maintain the main drain, and avoid pouring grease or flushing wipes down the pipes.
- How many plumbers in the directory serve Longueuil?
- 64 plumbers in the directory serve Longueuil, including 51 with an RBQ licence number and none offering 24/7 emergency service. Listings with reviews have an average Google rating of 4.5 out of 5 (1,713 reviews). These figures come from published listings and change as the directory evolves.
- How do I choose a plumber for sewer backup in Longueuil?
- Check the contractor's licence in the RBQ public registry, ask for a written quote describing the work and the warranty, and usually compare two or three proposals. Listings for Longueuil show the RBQ licence number and, when available, the Google rating.
